How to Choose a Name for Your Baby Boy
Say It Out Loud
Saying your baby’s FULL name (first, middle, and last name) out loud does a few things. First, it helps you make sure the name has a nice “ring” to it- that it’s not too much of a mouthful. (Evander Alexander, for example.)
Saying the name out loud also helps you make sure you’re not unintentionally giving your baby a funny name. Some common names can suddenly turn into a joke when combined. (April Schauer, for example.)
Have Friends Pronounce It
Okay, I totally understand not wanting to hear everyone’s annoying opinions about your list of baby names.
(“Oh, I went to high school with someone named that and they were so mean!”)
But it does help narrow down your list if you can run ideas by a few people close to you (that you can trust to not be negative). Whoever it is, just explain to them that you just want a second opinion- no negativity allowed.
Personally, I asked my sister, mom, and mother-in-law to pronounce my favorite boy names. Here’s how I did it:
- I texted the name to them.
- I asked them to send a voice memo back, reading the name back to me.
If they pronounced it differently than I had intended or if they had trouble sounding it out, I just scratched it off the list.
(For me, it was really important that my son wouldn’t have to be the kid who had to constantly correct his teachers during the morning attendance!)
Consider The Initials
No one wants embarrassing initials. Think F.L.U. and W.T.F. for example. Yikes!
Consider The Nicknames
Again, you don’t have to tell everyone what names you’re considering, but if you have a few people close to you who aren’t too judgy to bounce your ideas off of, it can be helpful feedback.
For example, my mom wanted to name me Michelle, but when my grandma told her she’d call me Shelly for short, that ruled out the name for my parents.
Funny story: A friend of mine wanted to name her son Curtis Joseph because she thought the nickname “Cujo” sounded cute. And it did sound cute… until she found out about the Stephen King novel where the star, Cujo, is a rabid dog.
Some things are just good to know before you commit!
Consider The Meaning
If meaning is important to you, run your name through BabyNames.com to find the root meaning of the names you’re considering.
Consider The Celebrities
I’ve included some of the most famous people or characters with these names, but there are plenty more!
Now, if you really love the name, this might not matter to you. But, I think it’s good to at least be aware of celebrities who share the name because other people will bring it up to you and your child.
For example, I love the name Archie, but if it bothers you that this is the name of the world-famous royal, son of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, then it might not be the best choice for your son.
Running a quick Google search can clear that up for you before you finalize a name. Just type in “Famous Allens” and you’ll get a full list!
Make it Sentimental
Choosing your baby’s name is HARD. If you find yourself getting stuck, why not take a look back at your family tree?
Maybe you or your spouse has a great-grandparent with a name you love. It will feel all the more sentimental to use a family name too!
Congratulations!
I hope this list of baby boy names that start with the letter “A” helped you and your family come up with something that you love.
Which is your favorite A name from this list? Share below! I’d love to know. 🙂
